I know a bunch of you are engineering students, and I’ve seen people ask about getting into the auto industry. For your sake, and for anyone else’s information, I want to talk about something obvious: DON’T DO STUPID SHIT. YOU’LL GET FIRED. AND NO ONE WILL HIRE YOUR ASS AGAIN.

Don’t come to Jalopnik/Autoweek/Oppo/Facebook/wherever talking about your cool proprietary knowledge. I promise you, they will not pay you nearly enough to cover your dumb unemployable ass until retirement age.

Don’t take pictures. Not in the plant, not in the proving grounds, nah.

DON’T LEAVE CAD UP ON YOUR LAPTOP. Especially exteriors! Even just running to take a piss - lock the screen, shut the lid, whatever!

Be smart. Do the job you got hired to do. Don’t be a liability.

Inspired by the FP BMW thing.

Well fine Ms. Buzzkillington, I guess I’ll just delete that scheduled post I made with corvette zora autoCAD pics in it.

I’ll also keep quiet about the grand national coming back. Uhh...which it totally isn’t.

“Should we at least verify this is the real deal? I mean, we’re blindly trusting this so-called leak to the point where the word “probably” is in our title. It would seem irresponsible to —”

“POST IT. POST IT NOW. WE HAVE TO GET OUR CLICKITY-CLACKS ON”

Now, if a manufacturer was really clever, they’d take CAD components of a failed design proposal (say a bumper or even a 3/4 view), find a way of getting it to the press a few months before the actual car is ready to be unveiled while making the files seem accurate, have it blow up all over the web, and then drop the curtain at the autoshow to unveil something that doesn’t feature any of those elements or parts, making the press who jumped on the “story” look like fools and at least partially discrediting future leaks.

Wow, that is dumb as shit. I wonder if manufacturers use any kind of canary trap, specific identifiers for work stations or files, something to id the leak.

So even though I primarily deal with housing loans, every so often I have to (get to?) inspect factories/industrial properties. The amount of paperwork required to photograph environmental concerns in a PVC factory for a legitimate report that the owner requested is ridiculous. I can’t even imagine proprietary concerns in the automotive industry.

No really though, your obvious advice is good anywhere, not just for engineers in the auto industry

FWIW, I’m pretty sure the M5 isn’t real. I don’t know this because they don’t tell us dick at the dealership level, but the M design language is not that solid outline shown in the render. The current Ms have the giant intake scissors on either end with a higher center section. This looks like a bad copy paste with someone who couldn’t figure out how to make it look “right”.

I have a good friend who works for a big auto company as an engineer and he always tells me how he hates it when stuff leaks out about his company’s future cars.

This is good advice. Even for little guys like me. We periodically get insider information or see engineers working on various things. Sometimes they tell us not to take pictures, but even when they don’t tell us it’s a good idea not to. For example, I got to see the C450 AMG, in person, months before the general public even knew it existed or would exist. But for that they basically told us we would be blackballed if we took pictures.

Yeah...David Tracy directly worked on the new Wrangler and he can’t peep a word to Jalopnik writers. What he has within his mind is.....worth at least hundreds of dollars of ad dollars for Gizmodo media.

When I was at FCA, I worked on those lovely cars built up in Brampton. Had a friend who wrote for Autoweek hit me up asking if I’d heard anything about something called a Hellcat. SORRY CAN NEITHER CONFIRM NOR DENY ANYTHING, NO INFO FROM ME, FRIEND. Rule of thumb is that if it’s been released to the public, public knowledge is safe to discuss. Not a moment sooner though, and not a bit more than has been officially released.
